I have been in the gifting business for many years, and if there is one thing I have come to realise, it is that gifting is rarely just about the gift itself.
Behind every gift, there is usually a reason.
Sometimes it is to say thank you. Sometimes it is to celebrate. Sometimes it is to appreciate someone who has walked a long journey with us. And sometimes, it is simply our way of saying — I hope this relationship continues for many more years.
Perhaps that is why I have always looked at gifting through three different moments in our lives.
The past, the present and the future.
The Past — To Remember
Over the years, we meet many people.
Some become our friends. Some are our colleagues. Some are customers, suppliers or business partners. We work together, solve problems together, disagree with each other, celebrate together and sometimes eventually move on to different chapters of our lives.
But that doesn’t mean those moments are forgotten.
I think there is something very meaningful about giving a gift to someone simply to say:
I remember what we have been through together.
It could be appreciating a business partner for ten years of cooperation. It could be a farewell gift for a colleague who has worked alongside you for many years. Or perhaps something for an old friend to remember a particular chapter of your lives together.
The gift doesn’t have to repay the relationship. In fact, I don’t think any gift can.
It is simply something physical that represents a memory.
Years later, when they see it again, perhaps they will remember the people, the conversations, the struggles, the laughter and that particular period of their life.
And maybe that is enough.
The Present — To Celebrate
Then there are moments happening right now.
A company expands into a new location.
A business finally gets listed after years of hard work.
Someone moves into a new home.
Your parents celebrate another birthday.
A team finally achieves something they have been working towards for months or even years.
These moments are emotionally rewarding by themselves. You don’t necessarily need a gift to make them meaningful.
But I have always felt — if today is special, why not leave something behind to remember today?
This is where gifting becomes part of the celebration.
Not because of how expensive the gift is, but because it becomes associated with that particular moment.
Years from now, the new shop will no longer feel new. The excitement of moving into a new house will settle down. Another birthday will come. A company will move on to its next milestone.
But something given on that day may still be sitting somewhere in the office or home.
And every once in a while, it reminds us:
This was given to me when that happened.
That is the beauty of a present gift.
It gives today’s celebration something that can remain after today is over.
The Future — To Continue
This is perhaps the part of gifting that I find most interesting, especially in business.
Many business relationships begin with a very simple transaction.
A customer decides to purchase something from you.
A company decides to appoint you.
Two businesses decide to work together.
At that particular moment, nobody really knows where the relationship will eventually lead.
But behind every transaction is something very important — trust.
Someone chose your company instead of another. Someone believed that you could deliver what you promised. Someone was willing to begin a relationship with you.
I think that deserves appreciation too.
A gift at the beginning of a relationship can carry a very different meaning.
It can say:
Thank you for your trust. We appreciate this opportunity, and we hope this is only the beginning.
For an existing customer, it can be a way of recognising their continued belief and support.
For business partners, it can represent the hope that today’s cooperation becomes a long-lasting relationship.
Of course, a gift alone will never create a good business relationship. That still comes from trust, honesty, service and delivering what we promise.
But a thoughtful gift can represent the intention behind it.
May what we started today continue into the future.
More Than an Object.
After spending so many years in this industry, perhaps this is how I have come to understand what we actually do at Gold Art.
We create gifts, yes.
But hopefully, what we are really helping people create are markers of relationships and moments.
Something to appreciate the people who were part of our past.
Something to celebrate the people and achievements in our present.
And something that represents our hope for the relationships we want to carry into the future.
Because eventually, businesses change. People move on. Children grow up. Companies expand. Careers change. And life continues.
But certain moments deserve not to be forgotten.
Sometimes, a simple gift is all it takes to help us remember.
For what we shared yesterday. For what we celebrate today. And for what we hope to build tomorrow.
